Semi-recently I set a goal to watch all of AFI's 100 greatest movies of all time. I have yet to set an end date for when I should accomplish this goal. I'm not sure if it's necessary or even a good idea. The hope is that I will enjoy the films deemed the "Greatest of ALL Time," not think of it as a task I have to punch away at. Right now 1 out of every 3 films I rent are from the list... not bad. So, tonight we watched The Graduate (#7) which puts me at 30/100 and at 9 of the top 10. It was a little slow in the beginning, but overall I liked it & laughed a lot more than I expected.

Yesterday night we watched DodgeBall which was short, but I thought it was really funny. Very NON-PC!! Ben Stiller's performance was a little wishy-washy for me, but I've officially become a Vince Vaughn fan!

Moving on. Today I created a budget. There are some semi-big things I want to purchase, but I want to still be able to get rid of my credit card debit... At the end of all the calculations I realized that deciding to get an engineering degree was a damn good idea!!

First off I'd like to get an elliptical trainer, we don't have a ton of room in this one bedroom apt, but I've become so 'whatever' about it here that I don't think I'll mind the decrease in extra space. Especially since I've already accepted the fact that soon Dave's probably going to have to bring a sound booth in here... then there really won't be any space. LOL. It would've killed me to even think of it a few years ago. Now there's the short (or long) WTF!!!!! Then I shrug my shoulders & laugh at it. It's much better, less stressfully and less likely of causing heart damage.

Lastly, Dave's birthday is on Monday, but I already gave him 2 of his gifts. I get SO excited I don't like waiting (a reason why I do semi-last minute shopping). I also don't see why he should have to wait to get something he'll really like & will enjoy using. Man, it's EASY to give when you KNOW the person will like the gift!! That's my idea of gift giving, not that obligated "I'm just going to give you something" method. Anyways, We'll see if I can get through tomorrow w/o giving him the last present... gl 2 me!

Man, I'm really rambling... time for bed. Good Night!

Correction-Pein

Correction to my previous post: Ping

It has been brought to my attention that the hammer is a 'Pein', not 'Ping', Hammer. Whoops.

The history of the "Ping Hammer." I saw the hammer here at work. Asked what it was. Someone said it... I wasn't sure if I heard him right. Googled-Ping & these 2 images came up. Cool... Ping Hammer it is... WRONG!!!

Sorry Pein!
(Pein even works better for my ah-hem observation)

Atefah Sahaaleh

There was a report today on BBC News about a 16 year old girl, Atefah Sahaaleh, who was hanged in Iran. The story is pretty shocking... "The state-run newspaper accused her of adultery and described her as 22 years old. But she was not married - and she was just 16... Alongside murder and drug smuggling, sex outside marriage is also a capital crime." If you're interested in the article you can read it here:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/5217424.stm

From the article I learned that: The age of sexual consent for girls under Sharia law is nine!!!

That just doesn't seem right to me.

On a lighter note... these pictures are really cool.

"I like your skirt"

This morning as I was walking to my car in the Albertson's parking lot this woman got my attention to tell me that she liked my skirt. Initially I was really flattered & felt pretty good about it. Then about a minute later I thought back to the woman. She had on all orange. Matching shirt & shorts. Now, not to completely knock women who wear all orange, that's a style that a group of people probably like, but I'm not into it. I think about how, if a designer that I like offers a compliment, although I'm not specifically a fan of any designer, it's just the idea, I'd be more inclined to value it. However, if a raggity mess of a person offers a compliment, is it less Reliable?

I'm not a very fashionable girl and I don't get complemented on my clothes very often. I respect the woman's opinion and appreciate her comment... but what should her opinion worth to Me?

If someone that has taste, lifestyle, morals, etc... different from your own, how much should their opinion be worth to You? If you are in need of compliments in general you'll take anything you can get, but is it reasonable? I'm not terribly troubled or consumed with this, it's just something that I wonder about from time to time.

*A Side Note: that whole, "the opinion of others shouldn't be important, it's how you value yourself" yeah yeah, blah blah blah. i understand the idea and am not looking for a lesson in self worth, i'm just curious about the complementing side of spectrum... cause we ALL need them. :-)

Ringtone

I had a bitch of a time finding this ringtone I was looking for and now I'm having a bitch of a time downloading it to my cell.

I was getting annoyed at first because it was taking a really long time for me to find the ringtone I wanted. When I finally found it online, the system kept erroring out when I got to the purchase page! Later I found an application for my phone that actually had the song.

I had the option of purchasing one of two packages or just purchasing the song. I figured I'd try just the one song for now. I went all the way through the menus. Found & previewed the song... perfect! I select, 'buy'... "Fatal System Error!"... I wanted to try again... just in case. This time I decided to go ahead with the package. So, purchasing the package went through. (good sign) From there I went to my song & requested to acquire... "Fatal System Error!!!" 2x!!!

Now, not only do I NOT have my damn ringtone, but I also used a fair amount of minutes trying to buy it! NOT COOL!

Ping

So, This is a "Ball Ping Hammer."
The regular sized handle with a little head reminded me of scary pictures I've seen of regular sized guys

Pancake Day

I was reminded today about
Pancake Day!
in Park Forest.

It's one of the only, if not the only community event I religiously participated in. I looked online and found out that this year will be the 54th Pancake Day! It's so sad that I won't be able to go, so to all that do, eat a Pancake for me & get some of that tasty chocolate milk!

Wow, Park forest has a website
July 30th there is free Yoga in the park. It would probably be really hot & humid, and I'm not sure what sketchy people would show up, but it's a cool idea.
~Eh, enough about ghetto ass PF~

The construction is complete in our office (for now, the carpet is still messed up). As soon as the dust is cleaned up we get to move in! I'll take some pics once it's all set up & show some before & after shots! Man it'll be nice to be at MY desk again. It sucks not having all of my things when I'm working. Yesterday really made me appreciate having a desk to myself. I'm not sure how Ana did it for the past 1 1/2 weeks. She's a trooper :)

Getting home

When Dave and I finally got to Joanna's house on June 12th, I didn't think a day of traveling could ever be so long, but I was Wrong....

The dilema for how we would get to the train station was solved by calling Sauk Trail Taxi Cab. Now, this "Cab Co." is not like any ordinary cab co., nope. They sent a very large black men wearing grey sweat pants and a ratty t-shirt driving a broken down ass car where the back seat leaks so you can sit on only 1/2 of it. The doors in the back had holes in the panel so that you could see the wiring inside. The "meter" didn't get used, instead there was a cheap flat fee. Also, the car sounded like it had trouble driving and I don't think that it would've been capable going over 30 w/o breaking down. Now on to the driver, his ghetto-slang was SO thick and add to that a slight lisp, that Dave and I almost couldn't understand him ramble on about god knows what... this actor, that actress, his 30 year reunion... and mind you, this is only a 5 minute cab ride. In the end, I was thankful for the experience and for actually getting to the train station on time. South Suburbs, gotta love'em! The only thing I regret from that is that since my camera batteries were dead I couldn't get a pic. of the driver or the cab :-( GGRR!

The long day broken down:
9:45 - Wake up
10:30 - Sauk Trail Taxi Cab Driver arrives
11:00 - Metra picks us up from the Richton Park stop
12:00 - Metra arrives Downtown and we walk in the pouring rain over to the "L" 4-5 blocks away.
1:10 - Check in
1:15 - Check our bags
1:25 - Pass through security. Then we waited for over an hour to start boarding. There were crazy delays in O'hare due to the storms from that morning. We sat next to 2 women who were waiting to fly out to New Orleans and at that point their plane had been delayed at least 4 hours. A few minutes after finding that out a woman came over the loud speaker and said that the flight to San Francisco had been canceled! We're like, SHIT! But somehow, they really wanted to get us out to LA so we boarded pretty much ontime.
2:50 - On Board
5:05 - Landed (Gained 2 hours!)
5:20 - Found Luggage and caught a cab. I guess that if you start a cab ride from the airport there is an automatic $2.50 added onto your ride (ug!). Then since I had my car parked at DRI we had the guy take us down there. Yeah, smart thinkin' on my part, we landed dead in the middle of rush hour on a THURSDAY~arguably the worst traffic day. The cool thing though is I think we got the best cab driver in LA. We were in Torrance in maybe 30 min despite the fact that the 405 South was packed and we didn't even drive in the car pool lane. Cost: $36.00
6:10 - after checking out the office construction we headed home... which took a long time, plus we picked up some Thai food.
FINALLY sometime after 7:00 we're home!

I was SO exhausted and seeing as my office wasn't done yet, I got it cleared with my boss and took the day off. Starting this morning I'm on track to catch up on some sleep & chores around the house. I miss you Chicago

*I'm still working on putting the pics together for posting. Until then, here are a few...

Coming home... quck summary

So, basically I just got done spending ~15 min typing up a quick post summarizing my vacation. THEN Mozilla crashed & blogger didn't save the last draft. WTF! UG! Well, since my desire to post something is greater than my annoyance w/technology, I'll try to recreate or summarize my summary.

On to a more detailed summary...
~ I visited w/family!
~ We ate at Fuddruckers!
~ We ate at Big Apple Pancake House!
~ We went to the Museum of Science and Industry!
~ I shopped at H&M!
~ We ate at Giordonos!
~ We walked around Chicago!
~ We went to Josh's Wedding!
~ We went to Andy's Jazz Club!
~ And more...

I really needed this break from my usually dull monotonus life in California. What sucks is that it feels like it's ending too fast. Not only did I not get to visit with everyone I would've liked to see, but I also wish I had more time to SLEEP! We are traveling all day tomorrow, which by the way we still don't know how we're getting to the train station, so I'll just have a 1-day work week. (Not bad!) But most likely it'll be hectic cause they probably won't be done expanding our office. I've found that construction jobs rarely finish "ontime." Hopefully I'll be able to sleep & spend time on the beach this weekend.

So, on to figuring out the rest of tonight & tomorrow. I hope everyone else had a great week!

2 more things:
1. American Airlines SUCKS!
2. To see pics of my office construction check out Ana's entry.

Re-coop. Re-evaluate. RELAX.

Now, although this is only a 2 day work week, Monday was super sucky. Not for any immediate threats or BIG annoyances, just a million little frustrating things. I think working before a vacation is tough. My mind is elsewhere. Also, there’s a reason that I need a vacation. I need to escape the dull, repetitive, tiring routine of my daily life right now. Re-coop. Re-evaluate. & RELAX! It just doesn’t feel like it’s coming soon enough… and its frustrating cause I’m going to have to work until the bitter end of leaving LA. But even that is going to be f’in stressful. Our itinerary for tomorrow: 30-45 min to DRI, 20-30 min to LAX, 2 hr wait for flight, 4 1/2 hr flight, 30-45 min wait for luggage, 1 hr blueline trip downtown, 1 hr Metra trip to the suburbs… that’s 10+ hrs of traveling! YUCK!!!

On a happier note, I packed up my office yesterday. They’re starting construction tomorrow & should be done by the time I get back, woohoo!!!! I’m excited!

Late at Night

Soon to come... New Office!

So, the boss is back from vacation & I leave for Chicago in 2 days, so I've got lots of work to do in preparation for leaving. Exciting news though: when I'm gone they're going to remodel my office, increasing the size of it by 30%!!!!!!! Ana & I will then have the coolest office in the building. I'm just crossing my fingers, hoping that we don't get kicked out by any of the upper managers. Below are diagrams of the changes. The second has the potential, but not final furniture setup, which allows for me to face the door so that ppl can't see my computer screen before I see them :) I'm SO excited!!!

NOW:

LATER!!:

Weekend Activities

I had a pretty good last few days.

Friday- after work Dave & I went over to the batting cages in Torrance. He & I are a bunch of light weights. We hit 40 mph pitches for 45 minutes & since it was hot & we didn't have gloves on we both got a bilster on our hands... yuck, but it was SSOO fun! I think we'll make that a weekly or bimonthly tradition. The only downfall is that it's kind of expensive & we were in a not so great area. I couldn't imagine what a nice facility would cost. Anyways, it was awesome :)

Saturday-Day I went shopping for a dress to wear to the wedding I'm going to next Saturday (in Chicago!!). I HATE shopping! But, after 3 hrs of at least 6 dressing rooms & about 30-40 dresses, I was actually successful & found a dress that I'm really excited about wearing. Thank god!!! But since where I parked had a 3 hr limit, I didn't have time to find shoes or jewlery.

Saturday-Night Dave & I went to Burbank to chow down on some FUDDRUCKERS (always a delicious treat) and to hang out w/Tom which included Buffy & Angel episodes & hanging up in the hot tub.

Sunday- An IHOP opened down the street from our regular Sunday breakfast place, so we decided to test it out. The food was just ok, the service was mediocre, and it was $30 (not incuding tip), $10 more than we pay for the same meal at the other place, ug! On the way home we stopped at Out of the Closet, one of the thrift stores that we're fans of. I found a bunch of really cool mismatched plates bringing our plate count from 3 to 10. I also got a few other steals. The total should've been about $30 for everything, but the guy only charged us $20. So, we were pretty happy about that... which ironically made up for breakfast cost difference. That night we relaxed. I played WOW for the first time in about 3 weeks & we watched What's Eating Gilbert Grape. Good acting. I'd seen it before, but in my memory I thought Arnie died... I'm not sure how that happened :-P

I didn't get to bed until about 2:30 am. Starting a conversation at 12:30 am about our lives, plans, goals, recent achievements, or lack there of... doesn't result in getting to bed at a reasonable time. But it was as good of a time as any. Our minds seem to kick into high gear just after mid-night & you can't really fight nature. Just deal w/it the next day when you're tired as hell... at least it's cause you were being productive the night before :)

Summary: Good Weekend :)

'Breast ironing' to stunt girls' growth widespread

1 in 4 girls in Cameroon suffer this abuse to protect against rape
Friday, July 7, 2006; Posted: 9:49 a.m. EDT (13:49 GMT) at CNN.com

YAOUNDE, Cameroon (Reuters) -- Worried that her daughters' budding breasts would expose them to the risk of sexual harassment and even rape, their mother Philomene Moungang started 'ironing' the girls' bosoms with a heated stone.

"I did it to my two girls when they were eight years old. I would take the grinding stone, heat it in the fire and press it hard on the breasts," Moungang said.

"They cried and said it was painful. But I explained that it was for their own good."

"Breast ironing" -- the use of hard or heated objects or other substances to try to stunt breast growth in girls -- is a traditional practice in West Africa, experts say.

A new survey has revealed it is shockingly widespread in Cameroon, where one in four teenagers are subjected to the traumatic process by relatives, often hoping to lessen their sexual attractiveness.

"Breast ironing is an age-old practice in Cameroon, as well as in many other countries in West and Central Africa, including Chad, Togo, Benin, Guinea-Conakry, just to name a few," said Flavien Ndonko, an anthropologist and local representative of German development agency GTZ, which sponsored the survey.

"If society has been silent about it up to now it is because, like other harmful practices done to women such as female genital mutilation, it was thought to be good for the girl," said Ndonko.

"Even the victims themselves thought it was good for them."

However, the practice has many side-effects, including severe pain and abscesses, infections, breast cancer, and even the complete disappearance of one or both breasts.

The survey of more than 5,000 girls and women aged between 10 and 82 from throughout Cameroon, published last month, estimated that 4 million women in the central African country have suffered the process.

"You ask me why I did it?" said Moungang. "When I was growing up as a little girl my mother did it to me just as all other women in the village did it to their girl children. So I thought it was just good for me to do to my own children."

Common in town
The practice is now more common in urban areas than in villages, because mothers fear their children could be more exposed to sexual abuse in towns and try to suppress outward signs of sexuality, the survey said.

Its findings have prompted a nationwide campaign to educate mothers about its dangers and to try to eradicate it. A similar campaign some years ago helped drastically to reduce rates of female genital mutilation in Cameroon.

"A girl...has to be proud of her breasts because it is natural. It is a gift from God. Allow the breasts to grow naturally. Do not force them to disappear or appear," said a leaflet from the campaign.

Moungang said she stopped ironing her daughters' breasts after one girl developed blisters and abscesses.

"I took her to the hospital and the doctor scolded me and advised never to do it again because it could ruin my daughter," she said.

"When Mariane married and delivered her first baby, it took a long time -- about a month -- for her breasts to start producing milk and the child almost died. I was told it was because I had ironed her breasts. I was frightened."

The younger a girl develops, the more likely she is to have her bosom ironed -- 38 percent of girls developing breasts under the age of 11 had undergone the procedure.

The practice is most common in the Christian and animist South of the country, rather than in the Muslim North and Far North provinces, where only 10 percent of women are affected.

The survey found that in 58 percent of cases breast ironing was carried out by mothers worried that the onset of puberty could provoke sexual harassment, inhibit their daughters' studies or even stunt their growth.

Many mothers were alarmed because an improvement in nutrition and living conditions had caused young girls' breasts to develop earlier than ever.

Destroying breasts
"Massaging the breasts with hot objects is painful, very painful, and can completely destroy the breasts," said Bessem Ebanga, executive secretary of women's rights group RENATA, herself a former victim.

"Some girls could be traumatized throughout their lives and their sexual behavior could be disturbed forever."

Thirteen-year-old Geraldine Mbafor could not hold back her tears as she narrated her ordeal.

"I had just finished doing my homework when my mother summoned me to the kitchen. She boiled water and in the water she put a grinding stone. She then removed the stone holding it with a thick cloth to protect her hands, and placed it my breasts and started ironing them," she stated.

"I felt so much pains that I started crying. After that she bandaged my breasts with a band called breast-band ... She did this to me for two and a half months."

According to 14-year-old Amelia, who would not give her family name, her breasts started developing when she was 9. Her elder sister decided to massage them every evening with a towel soaked in hot water.

"This was very painful, and every evening before I slept, she would put a big elastic belt well fastened round my chest to flatten my breasts."

"Six months later the flesh that held my breasts was already weak. At 10, I already had fallen breasts and each time I undress I'm ashamed and it is a big complex."

Nevertheless, support for and opposition to the tradition remains evenly balanced. According to the survey, 39 percent of women opposed it, while 41 percent expressed support and 26 percent were indifferent.

For Ndonko, the campaign is a battle to respect the physical integrity of young girls -- with broader implications for human rights.

"If nothing was done today, tomorrow the very parents may even resolve to slice off the nose, the mouth or any other part of the girl which they think is making her attractive to men."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How SAD! Not only that it is done, but that the risk of rape & sexual harrasment is so high that mothers feel that it is necessary to protect their girls. Like teenage girls don't have enough self-esteem issues w/o this procedure. My heart goes out to them!
Watch the right lane!
It's Crazy!
Short Week!
A 2-day work week? I can definitely handle this! :)
Which might end up being a 1-day work week cause I'm not feeling so good... I think I've got fever :-( Eh, I'll go home & sleep all night... that should clear it up. Anyways, I've got a week to feel better than it's home to Chi-town! WooHoo.
Man, I've become a "woohoo" freak!
*Also, does anyone know of any good Jazz Clubs in the city (Chicago)? (E-mail, call or comment please)
I'm GB Man!
Today Dave, Danny (his cousin), & Me went surfing at Scripps Pier, which kind of sucked. There was hardly any surfable whitewater for me. I was kind of sour about it for a bit. I wasn't working (-$$) and we spent money to rent the boards & wetsuits (more -$$). But then I realized that there are 2 ways of looking at it. 1. I wasn't sitting behind a desk, which just thinking about surfing already beats that! 2. I was NOT sitting behind a desk! So, still a win. :-P
On the way home from La Jolla Dave & I stopped to get dinner at Pizza Nova and along came
GB Man!
What a cutie!
Oh, & another awesome thing... once we got back on the highway we flew home... AND there was good music on the radio!... NO WAY?!?! In LA?!?!?.... YES WAY!!! In LA!!! ~i'm lame, oh well~
4th of La Jolla
I had a great 4th of July! which is a good thing seeing as it's my 2nd/3rd favorite day of the year (depending on the year). Dave & I drove down to La Jolla (just north of San Diego) Monday night. His Uncle lives here & it's a beautiful ($$) beach town. After an afternoon of grilling & hanging out. We went down to the water, which mostly cosists of rocks & small cliffs. Anyways, there were a TON of people around on the grass, on the paths, etc... so we climbed over the railing & down to some rocks.... a bit scary but cool! We were a little unsure exactly where they were shooting off the fireworks from, but when the show started at 9 there was NO confusion. They were RIGHT above us! It was SO beautiful and Romantic! I LOVE fireworks!!
Another cool thing was that afterwards as we looked north across the cove, we could see a different town's fireworks in the distance... Which also looked like a great show. Afterwards we had the added bonus of not having to drive home. We just walked 10 min back to their place. Ah, just like PF :-P
Dave & I decided to stay down here in La Jolla for another night so that we wouldn't have to make the trip back to LA after the fireworks which would take HOURS and it wasn't worth the stress. So, I took an additional day off of work (much needed). We have yet decided whether we'll surf, go to Sea World, or just head home.... Regardless, I've had a good last few days.
Another Year & New Plates
On Monday the 3rd, Dave and I hit the 1 year mark for being here in California!! WE made it! (which also reminded me that in May I hit the 1 year mark since I graduated from UIC, I'm using and living off of my degree...woohoo!)
Another 'event' from Monday, I finally got California plates for my car. I was supposed to have done it w/in the first few weeks of being here, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. Then my plates decided to expire, so it was either renew in Illinois or Cali. W/Illinois comes the fact that I would also have to get a city sticker, which they don't require in Cali. AND it's illegal for me to live here & not be registered here & if 'they' figured it out I would end up having to get Cali plates & that would just be paying x2. Not to mention whatever tickets would be included.
I ignorantly thought that I would be excited about the new plates. "Woo Hoo. Cali plates! Cali girl!"... but I just ended up feeling like I'm a poser. I know that's probably a ridiculous and an extreme thought & that they're just plates for god's sake, but it just doesn't feel like me. I'm a city girl with a Chicagoans' heart and that won't ever change. I like it here a lot, but I still haven't gotten used to the mentality of the people here. Anyways, There's nothing like home~which I get to visit in 7 days!!
*Side Note* If you live in the US, you should know how to pronounce the names of the states! Illinois does NOT have an 'S' on it damnit!!!!!
