"I like your skirt"

This morning as I was walking to my car in the Albertson's parking lot this woman got my attention to tell me that she liked my skirt. Initially I was really flattered & felt pretty good about it. Then about a minute later I thought back to the woman. She had on all orange. Matching shirt & shorts. Now, not to completely knock women who wear all orange, that's a style that a group of people probably like, but I'm not into it. I think about how, if a designer that I like offers a compliment, although I'm not specifically a fan of any designer, it's just the idea, I'd be more inclined to value it. However, if a raggity mess of a person offers a compliment, is it less Reliable?

I'm not a very fashionable girl and I don't get complemented on my clothes very often. I respect the woman's opinion and appreciate her comment... but what should her opinion worth to Me?

If someone that has taste, lifestyle, morals, etc... different from your own, how much should their opinion be worth to You? If you are in need of compliments in general you'll take anything you can get, but is it reasonable? I'm not terribly troubled or consumed with this, it's just something that I wonder about from time to time.

*A Side Note: that whole, "the opinion of others shouldn't be important, it's how you value yourself" yeah yeah, blah blah blah. i understand the idea and am not looking for a lesson in self worth, i'm just curious about the complementing side of spectrum... cause we ALL need them. :-)

How shallow to even consider that her opinion/compliment would be worth nothing. She could have been someone wonderful with plenty of "fashion sense" who was just having a bad day... Regardless, in this day and age, when nice comments are the rarity, upon receiving one should not consider throwing it to the side. Maybe she thought she would make your day by telling you what a pretty skirt you have, and instead you stoop low and wonder whether her opinion is worth anything. Pathetic.
